Authority Magazine – Rising Music Star Joe Symes And The Loving Kind On The Five Things You Need To Shine In The Music Industry

Uncategorized

Shows don’t always go to plan, and for many reasons.

Some people are not what they seem, and are out for themselves (yes, it was mentioned before, but it is an important one).

Don’t always think something can be done in one take in the studio, especially if you say it out loud (light-hearted, but true).

Some music venues are not there forever. Especially over the past year, we’ve sadly lost some great venues due to recent events in the world.

Overindulgence in any form is never good before going on stage. One of us can definitely vouch for that when we were 17 (again, light-hearted, but very true).

Asa part of our series about rising music stars, I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Joe Symes.

Joe Symes and the Loving Kind are a three-piece band from Liverpool, UK Consisting of Joe Symes (Vocals/Guitar/Harmonica), Colin White (Drums/Percussion/Backing Vocals), and Alan Welsh (Bass Guitar).

The band has not long finished a two-and-a-half-year tour across the UK and parts of Europe in promotion of their critically acclaimed second album Phase II: an album that has gained airplay on radio stations all over the world and UK, as well as reviews, magazine interviews, and endorsed by celebrities from the world of show business around the world and UK.

The band is also currently finishing off a four-track EP, which is a follow up to Phase II, and will be released in late 2021.

Thank you so much for joining us in this interview series! Our readers would love to get to know you a bit better. Can you tell us a bit of the ‘backstory’ of how you grew up?

JS&TLK — We (Joe Symes — Vocals/Guitar/Harmonica, Colin White –Drums/Percussion/Backing Vocals, Alan Welsh — Bass Guitar), were all brought up in Liverpool, which is in the northwest of England, surrounded by very loving and supportive families. Music of many different varieties was always around our houses, as well as classic films and TV shows, which we’re all still very fond of. The seeds of what we would all eventually do had definitely been planted at a very early age; it’s just we weren’t aware of it at the time.

Can you share a story with us about what brought you to this specific career path?

JS&TLK — Like what was said in the first question, music was always around our houses. For me (Colin), it must’ve been when I was 11 when my brother would play a lot of The Doors albums and videos. I remember seeing their Live at the Hollywood Bowl gig from 1968 and watching John Densmore in the middle of the stage on the drum riser, and thinking, “I can do that.” From then on there was no going back.

Can you share the funniest or most interesting story that occurred to you in the course of your career? What was the lesson or take away that you took out of that story?

JS&TLK — Ha! During those initial years, I think we all individually witnessed a lot of funny things; too many to mention. Mainly a list of dos and don’ts when going to gigs, and seeing people who probably shouldn’t have been on a stage in the first place make fools of themselves. One that springs to mind was a band who were told exactly how long they had to play, went over when they knew, and eventually got turned off. Plus, let’s just say their on stage image left a lot to be desired.

What would you advise a young person who wants to emulate your success?

JS&TLK — Hone your craft, whether it’s the instrument you play, and/or the songs that you write, and get it out there to as many people as possible. That is one of the advantages of social media at the moment. The more you share, the more people will know of you.

Can you please give us your favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you explain how that was relevant in your life?

JS&TLK — “Villains who twirl their mustaches are easy to spot. Those who clothe themselves in good deeds are well-camouflaged.”

That quote perfectly sums up some of the negative aspects of the business we’re in. While you will meet good, like-minded people, you may also come across some who are not what they seem, and attempt to take advantage or use you for their own personal gain. Believe me, we have.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story about that?

JS&TLK — To name one person would be impossible. As far as we’re concerned all the people who have believed in us from the start deserve that credit. Family, friends, all the people that have helped with our promotion in every way, and form. Those who read this will know who they are.

Let’s now shift to the main focus of our interview, how are you using your success to bring goodness to the world? Can you share with us the meaningful or exciting social impact causes you are working on right now?

JS&TLK — It’s all in the music. We’ve always taken pride in the fact that we write songs that appeal to a wide audience; songs that are uptempo, catchy, and lift people. That’s the main thing for us: that people walk away from listening to an album/single/EP, and from a gig in a good mood. Or if they weren’t beforehand, they will come away feeling better. Nothing in the world beats that thought of doing that.

Can you tell us the backstory about what originally inspired you to feel passionate about this cause and to do something about it?

JS&TLK — Probably when the band started, I suppose, and getting the songs together to record, and play live. Like what was said in the last question, There’s nothing better than people walking away from a show feel good. I don’t think we could live with ourselves if we heard that people left our gigs feeling miserable. Though we have heard about some bands doing that. Not our style.

Many of us have ideas, dreams, and passions, but never manifest it. But you did. Was there an “Aha Moment” that made you decide that you were actually going to step up and take action for this cause? What was that final trigger?

JS&TLK — Again, when we got that the band together; collectively, that is. Individually, I’d say when we started playing music; that time when we knew this is what we wanted to do with our lives, and never look back. And we can safely say when haven’t looked back ever.

Can you tell us a story about a particular individual who was impacted or helped by your cause?

JS&TLK — There is no one person. It’s all the people who love our music, and what we do. All of them collectively.

Are there three things that individuals, society or the government can do to support you in this effort?

JS&TLK — It’s simple really. Listen to our music, come and see us play, and spread the word to as many people as possible.

Fantastic. Here is the main question of our interview. What are your “5 things I wish someone told me when I first started” and why. Please share a story or an example for each.

JS&TLK — Ah, you’ve put us right on the spot here.

  1. Shows don’t always go to plan, and for many reasons.
  2. Some people are not what they seem, and are out for themselves (yes, it was mentioned before, but it is an important one).
  3. Don’t always think something can be done in one take in the studio, especially if you say it out loud (light-hearted, but true).
  4. Some music venues are not there forever. Especially over the past year, we’ve sadly lost some great venues due to recent events in the world.
  5. Overindulgence in any form is never good before going on stage. One of us can definitely vouch for that when we were 17 (again, light-hearted, but very true).

You are a person of enormous influence. If you could start a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger. 🙂

JS&TLK — We’re not really into movements. We’re just a band who plays uptempo, catchy music that we think appeals to many people, and when those people take good things from it, that’s us spreading our influence, and bringing out the best in people.

We are blessed that some of the biggest names in Business, VC funding, Politics, Sports, and Entertainment read this column. Is there a person in the world, or in the US whom you would love to have a private breakfast or lunch with, and why? He or she might just see this if we tag them 🙂

JS&TLK — Wow! That’s a tough one. Just one person can’t be singled out, as it would be unfair. To those who discover the band through this interview, perhaps people could email in their own questions, and we could answer some in a follow interview to promote the new EP later this year. If that’s OK with you, of course.

Thank you so much for these amazing insights. This was so inspiring, and we wish you continued success!

JS&TLK — Thank you very much for having us again. It’s been a pleasure, and spread the word like butter.

SPILLED INK REVIEWS: Joe Symes and the Loving Kind’s New Song, ‘I’m gonna find out someday…

Uncategorized

Liverpool’s Joe Symes & The Loving Kind have not allowed lockdown to suppress their creativity, quite the opposite in fact! The band have navigated through 2021 with much success and their new song is a testament to this. They have been Prolific in the studio and their fans are in for a treat.

I’m Gonna Find Out Someday by the Liverpool band, Joe Symes and the Loving Kind is from their double A-side single, Things Get Better/I’m Gonna Find Out Someday. While listening to the band’s latest song, my feet tapping to the beat, a smile emerged across my face, as I was reminded of happy summers, dancing freely in the open with like-minded friends. A catchy song, the kind you belt out the lyrics to – the best kind of music.

The perfect summer song that I can envision being played at festivals up and down the country. The sound of the acoustics and the melodic bursts transport the listener to freer times reminiscent of insouciant summers.

A talented band with exceptional songwriting skills, Joe Symes and the Loving Kind are captivating audiences across the demographics. Liverpool certainly has something flowing in the water, producing exceptional talent. You can listen to the band’s new song on Youtube.

The band’s acoustic sound is transcending, their musical talent is up there with best of the best and reminds me of another great band that emerged from Liverpool many years before. Joe Symes and the Loving Kind is an ageless band, a band ahead of its time and one that we will still be raving about in years to come.

Formed by Joe Symes and Colin White, later adding Alan Welsh (bass player) to form an impassioned force of insatiable music. And their talent does not end there, releasing songs on their own self-titled record label, Truly Independent Records.

Here at Spilled Ink, we are all in agreement that the band’s unique acoustic charm and the rocking beat of the drums are refreshing and much-needed. The summer of 2021 will be filled with the unforgettable sound of Joe Symes and the Loving Kind.

A quote by Chicago based Ryan Martin from Jammerzine “Take note if you are thinking of starting a band or wanting to get your music heard. This is how it’s done.”

SSM: Joe, you just released a great new song. What are your plans for the second half of 2021?

JS: The second half of 2021 will be to promote yet another release of our new 4 track Ep.

4 brand new songs that are very catchy and powerful.

Also along with Live radio sessions to promote it. And we start to confirm more dates for 2021.

SSM: You use beautiful b/w pics in the video. How came that about? Were you looking for a specific ‘mood’ for the video to represent the song?

JS: The pictures were taken by Jake Tierney who’s a new photographer from Liverpool who contacted our management after he heard our second album “Phase II’.

He’s a big fan of the band and works with only Black & White photography at the moment as he says it creates a mood and likes to capture the band in a relaxed mood instead of posing for normal pictures which he says can be a bit formal.

His company ‘The Academy’ put the video together and will be working for the band from now on, and we are very pleased with the video and it represents us at this time.

SSM: The last year was crazy. How did you survive?

JS: Last year was a strange time for everyone and a bad time for everyone. We just continued to work ourselves online with Radio interviews, promoting the band, writing, rehearsals when we were good to get together and being in touch with everyone. Let’s hope we can all get back to normal very soon.

P3DRO – 13 QUESTIONS WITH JOE SYMES AND THE LOVING KIND

Uncategorized

Joe Symes and the Loving Kind are the latest to have a go at our 13 Questions. They’re still looking for Sid, though.

With two albums in the can, the self titled debut and follow up Phase II, as well as a clutch of EPs along the way, the Liverpool trio (Joe Symes, Colin White and Alan Welsh) that makes up Joe Symes and the Loving Kind have had their wings clipped somewhat over the last year or so.

Making the point, wherever you read about them, that live performance is where they shine, this is a band that thrives on stage. Energetic rock is the phrase that best describes the band.

Phase II was recorded and produced in studios as diverse as Peter Gabriel’s Solid State Logic Studios, Oxfordshire, The Motor Museum, Liverpool, Parr Street Studios, Liverpool, and Abbey Road, London.

That gives a flavour of the band’s pedigree. Add in the fact they make a lot of noise for a three piece and you’ve got a successful, no nonsense, rock formula, one that draws from classic influences, but also makes the JS&TLK sound their own.

Following 2018’s Phase II release the band embarked on recording an EP that was to have been let loose last year until Covid intervened.

Gagging to get back out on the road, the band have delayed the EP release until 2021, but hope to get out and tour it as soon as they can.

In the meantime, they set about our 13 Questions:

Where are you and what are you doing?

JS&TLK – We’re in Liverpool, writing new material, finalizing pre-production work on our new EP, and keeping busy with tons of online promotion. Airplay all over the world, magazine interviews/reviews being done left, right and centre, radio sessions both locally and across the pond, celebrity endorsement videos being sent to us. Even during lockdown, it doesn’t stop for us.

  1. What is your favourite view?

JS&TLK – That there’s only two types of music. Good and bad. It’s as simple as that.

  1. What is your favourite swear word and why?

JS&TLK – We don’t have one.

  1. What was the first record / CD you bought with your own money?

JS&TLK – Probably a cassette with The Doors first album on one side, and ‘Waiting for the Sun’ on the other. It was bought from the old HMV in Liverpool city centre. We all have a lot of fond memories of that shop. Kinda miss it at times.

  1. Marmite. Yes, or no?

JS&TLK – No

  1. If you could go to a gig right now, anywhere in the world, which band would you see? And in which venue?

JS&TLK – Probably Paul McCartney at the Whisky a Go Go. You can’t beat those intimate gigs. The combination of playing with someone you greatly admire at venue you’ve always wanted to play is unbeatable. From the photos we’ve seen of the place it’s not a huge venue, but it has so much history to it, and that certain vibe every iconic venue should have.

  1. Who are your musical influences?

JS&TLK – There’s so many to name. The Beatles, The Doors, Echo & the Bunnymen, Burt Bacharach, R.E.M, The Who, The Smiths, Genesis, The Kinks, even film composers like John Barry, Ennio Morricone, Lalo Schifrin, Bernard Herrmann, so many.

  1. How do you like your eggs?

JS&TLK –We can’t really name one. Fried, boiled, scrambled, there’s a time and a place to them all, and they can be served in so many ways. Definitely a versatile food if you think about it.

  1. Tell us something we don’t know.

JS&TLK – As sure as eggs is eggs, aching men’s feet.

  1. Which city do you recommend we visit – and why?

JS&TLK – Rome. It’s such an inspiring and wondering place that has history oozing from the wall. Plus, with all the Lambretta and Vespa scooters, it has a 60’s vibe to the place. Like being in an episode of ‘The Saint’. Ha! Ha!

  1. What’s your drink of choice?

JS&TLK – Tea.

  1. What band or album do you think we should check out right now?

JS&TLK –Yes, check out our first two albums, the self-titled Joe Symes and the Loving Kind, and our latest one ‘Phase II’. Both available from our website.
Also, anything by our good friend actor/musician Andy Whittaker. He’s a big fan of the band, plus he’s a great musician himself, and splendid actor. Check him out.

  1. Do you have anything else to declare?

JS&TLK – If you see Sid, will you tell him?
