The Test Drive: Joe Symes and the Loving Kind – A Place To Call Our Own

Uncategorized

Joe Symes and the Loving Kind have released their new album titled ‘A Place To Call Our Own’. Joe and the boys have always been consummate songwriters to my ears but, with this latest and all too long awaited outing, we get more of an experienced and weathered band. What I mean by this is that the songs are almost ahead of the crowd, in a good way. We get that signature songwriting and construction, but with more experience, reflection, and just plain more of everything. Is this what happens when a monster of a band takes too long of a break? Guess we’ll have to find out next time. Cool thing is, there will be a next time.

SPILLED INK SUMMARY:

The band has excelled themselves with their latest EP and evolved further, stringing out their acoustics and unique flair of lyrics. While listening to the band’s latest song, my fingers wrapped on the table to the beat, while I was reminded of summers from my youth, dancing in the open air to Oasis with my friends. All four tracks are a testament to the band’s musical talent.

The band’s acoustic sound is transcending. Spilled Ink is reminded of another great band that emerged from Liverpool many years before!

Joe Symes and the Loving Kind is an ageless band and one that will be just as relevant in ten years as it is today.

Quote: Late early Beatles manager/promoter Sam Leach: “They are one of the most intriguing new bands to come out of Liverpool”.

A FEW OF THE BANDS INFLUENCES:

The Beatles, The Doors, The Who, The Kinks, Echo and the Bunnymen, Genesis, U2, Motown, Burt Bacharach and Hal David, to name a few!

Formed by Joe Symes and Colin White, later adding Alan Welsh (bass player) to form an impassioned force of insatiable music. And their talent does not end there, releasing songs on their own self-titled record label, Truly Independent Records.

Explore Liverpool: Listen Up Liverpool With Joe Symes and the Loving Kind

Uncategorized

In the first of our new series, Listen Up Liverpool, we caught up with local band Joe Symes and the Loving Kind.

According to late early Beatles manager/Merseybeat promoter Sam Leach, they are one of the most intriguing new bands to come out of Liverpool.

“Take note if you are thinking of starting a band, or wanting to get your music heard. This is how it is done.” says Ryan Martin of Chicago-based station Jammerzine.

When was you formed?

Officially the end of 2016

Who are your music influences?

There are so many to mention. The Beatles, The Doors, The Who, The Kinks, Echo and the Bunnymen, Genesis, U2, Motown, Burt Bacharach and Hal David, even film composers such as John Barry, Lalo Schifrin, and Ennio Morricone.

When did you begin to play live?

Literally within a matter of a couple of months of the band forming.

Do you have any music material (or new music) released?

Yes, we have our eponymous first album, second album Phase II, and a stand-alone double A side single I’m Gonna Find Out Someday/Things Get Better, which are all available in CD and download form from the band’s website www.joesymesandthelovingkind.co.uk

What is the best venue you’ve played at so far, and what venue is on your ‘to do’ list to play at?

There are so many venues we’ve loved playing. We couldn’t name just one. The main stage of 02 Academy 1, Liverpool, Theatr Brycheiniog, Brecon, Theatre Severn, Shrewsbury, The Box, Crewe, Foxlowe Arts Centre, Leek, The Scala, London, so many.

What’s the best advice you have been given and what advice would you give to new musicians?

To stick to your guns, and do what you believe is right regarding to your music. That advice we’d pass on to any younger musician, and to not let anyone tell them otherwise.

What does Liverpool mean to you, and what do you love about the city?

It’s the place were brought up in, and embraced as our home all of our lives. The fact there is so much heritage here which has made an impact globally is definitely something to be proud of.

What is next for you?

We’re in the process of finishing a brand new 4 track E.P, which is the follow up to the second album Phase II, and will be released in January 2022.
