There are a lot of great indie bands based in Liverpool, I am learning lately. Joe Symes and The Loving Kind is a perfect band to use as an introduction to the gold yet to be mined there.

After listening to the lively energetic trio, it was a no-brainer that I needed to learn more and shine the spotlight on them. Band founder and guitarist Joe Symes was more than happy to tell me everything I wanted to know about the three-piece band, which also includes drummer Colin White and bassist Stefan Bujak.

In preparation, I went to their website, YouTube and Soundcloud sites to study up. Their Soundcloud page is loaded with three brand new tunes well worth repeated spins.

“I’m Gonna Find Out Someday” is a charmer, with a bright bouncy sunshiny melody and trippy guitar play.

“Fallen Down” sets off at a hectic rambunctious pace and features an almost tribal sounding drum break.

“Things Get Better,” chosen as the first single, plays open tribute to one of the bands’ biggest influences — hometown boys The Beatles. While the tune serves up subtle nuances to The Beatles, the band is in no way trying to emulate them.

It was easy to come up with a stack of ace starter questions for Joe, which then evolved into new ones. Here’s our conversation:

After making it on our 25 Best Indie Albums of 2015, Joe Symes and the Loving Kind are back with their new single “Things Get Better”. This insta-classic has the dirt of The Beatles’ Revolver and the pristine of an untouched masterpiece with a hook that lasts two minutes fifty-eight seconds. Time will only prove me right as it does with most classic hits as it is yet another testament the the songwriting power of Joe and the gang and the tightness that is a family of powerful and dedicated musicians!

About Joe Symes & the Loving Kind and “Things Get Better”:
Since the release of their debut album in 2013, the band have embarked on a non-stop journey all over the UK, performing in cities and towns from London to Glasgow. Taking their self-titled debut on an assault around the country has seen them pick up some major support slots including The Blockheads, Dodgy, XTC, Bloc Party and Alt-J, as well as hitting the Festival circuit, and coming to the attention of Creation Management’s Alan McGee. The album has also been greatly received in America, and had magazine and airplay all over the world.

With the release of their new single, Things Get Better, the band showcase how they have evolved, formed from more increasingly energetic live performances, with a heavier sound, but still keeping their distinctive feel found on the first album. Things Get Better has already begun to attract attention at home and abroad, being featured on BBC Introducing, being played at Anfield (Liverpool FC) on match days, as well as already having some International airplay.
